To forestall post-harvest waste and loss of resources by small-scale farmers, the Chairman Senate Committee on Local Content – Senator Teslim Folarin has organized a 3-day training on provision and adoption of post-harvest techniques for young rural farmers in Oyo Federal Constituency of Oyo Central senatorial district.
The 400 participants drawn from Afijio, Atiba, Oyo East and Oyo West Local Government Areas were trained at IPMAN Event Centre by resource persons from the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA).
The Oyo Central lawmaker said the training would provide the needed skills and also help reduce post-harvest loss to the nearest minimum as well as enhance quality of produce.
Folarin further remarked that he initiated the project because of its significance to the people of his district who were largely farmers.
He noted that lack of knowledge on how to avert post-harvest losses had been one of the major challenges facing farmers in Nigeria.
“Realizing the significance of post-harvest techniques in farming is what actually motivated me to facilitate the just concluded 3-day training. Farmers in other federal constituencies of Oyo Central Senatorial District will also be given similar training opportunities”.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Ogundipe Adekunle thanked Senator Folarin for his initiative and love for the people of Oyo Central by making sure that masses-focused projects and programmes were appropriated in 2021 budget, and making sure that funds were released for the implementation.
“The 3-day training was another eye-opener to the new innovations on how to use tools and machineries to harvest our farm produce, and how to control post-harvest challenges, I received certificate of participation and cash grant as a little means of empowerment” he said.
