Suspected armed robbers, last Wednesday, invaded University of Ibadan hostels, located around Barika area of Agbowo community in Ibadan North Local Council of Oyo State and carted away some valuables belonging to occupants and students.
The Southwest Bureau Chief of The Guardian, Mr, Seye Olumide was one of the victims, while many students of the University of Ibadan and others were injured in the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to The Guardian newspaper, witnesses said the robbers stormed the area around 2:00 a.m. and started shooting indiscriminately.
Narrating his ordeal, Olumide said: “The men of the underworld came to raid the community around 2:00 a.m. I initially thought that policemen were the ones arresting some ‘yahoo boys’ when I started to hear some strange and piercing sound. I later realised that they were robbers operating in the community. They came with machetes and other dangerous weapons. They reached my apartment and carted away my two phones, power banks and some cash.”
Another eyewitness said the security guard on night duty was allegedly shot but narrowly escaped death.
A resident of the area, Olukemi Romoke said a student, identified simply as Victor, shot by the robbers was rushed down to the school clinic.
She said: “The robbers arrived in our area around 2:00a.m. A student, Victor was shot on his left leg. He has been taken to U’s clinic. They collected N250,000 cash and a Point of Sales (PoS) machine from our neighbour.
“Many students were injured, the robbers collected their money and phones. It was like a film last night. Police were invited but they couldn’t meet them.”
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Adewale Osifeso could not be reached for comment as he did not pick calls put across to his mobile telephone.
Also, efforts to get reaction from Director of Public Communication of University of Ibadan, Mr. Tunji Oladejo, failed as he did not pick his calls too.
